BRIEF: Use sheet logics to speculate on organizational and urban potential of the mid-rise tower.
We began our project with a conceptual and programmatic diagram of an involuted figure-8 circulation path around the two main programmatic elements, hotel & post-production studios, where the path itself would be lined with retail. From this initial parti, we found that a pair of double collars (see diagram) produced a shuffling of figure and void such that the void was as figurally described as the solid, and that the relationships between the folds offered additional formal potential.
In a move away from the bilateral symmetries of our first figure-8 diagram, we teased our fabric models into a set of forms that more accurately addressed site constraints. We started by creating a separation from the bustle of Vine Street and the emptiness of the parking lot immediately to the south of our site; this L-shaped collar became an opportunity to place retail at the ground level along Vine Street, with hotel rooms above. We placed our post-production studios on the east side of our lot, which, combined with the L-shaped retail/hotel building, created a secluded open area at the center, out of which we raised our mid-rise tower.
